Description
| Backsword, with mortuary hilt. Single edge blade, double edged towards tip and ending in a spear point. Double fuller running along length of blade next to the spine. The hilt is broken with sections of the guard missing. The bars have become detatched from the pommel and the grip is missing. The pommel is loose from the tang. The remains of a leather disc are still attached to the tang. Both the blade and hilt are heavily corroded, but traces of chiseled detail are still visible on the hilt. The edge of the blade is notched in several places and the tip is worn and rounded. The sword dates to the mid 17th century (1600s) and is one of two swords that came from Craig Farm, near Sandford. The farm was conveyed to William Cochran in 1649 having previously belonged to Sir Robert Hamilton of Silvertonhill. The sword may have belonged to a member of the Cochran and family and is typical of the style used by both Government and Covenanting forces during the mid-late 17th century. |
