Pulp-ware was at one time a popular alternative in Britain to the more expensive china or enamel ware. Wood pulp was shaped, dried and then finished with linseed oil and a variety of paints and lacquers to waterproof it. It was used for a wide variety of everyday objects, from bowls and basins to motorcycle and mining helmets. Thetford Pulp Ware, based in Norfolk, began in 1879 and was the premier manufacturer of objects made from this material. Pulp-ware's popularity waned in the 1950s as newer, cheaper plastics became more widespread.
