Description with scabbard. Second World War era. Type 98 military gunto. Steel blade has a pronounced curve. Metal fixings are a dark reddish brown with worn patina and matching floral patterns - representing cherry blossom, the symbol of the Imperial Japanese Army. The grip is covered with shagreen - rayfish skin - which is a discoloured white colour. The grip would also have been covered in interwoven criss-crossed leather straps for better grip but these are missing. There is a cord looped through a hole in the pommel at the end of the hilt which would have been used for affixing a tassel which denoted the rank of the wearer; however the tassel is missing. The scabbard itself is made of a light metal which has oxidised to a grey-green colour and at one time would have been covered in brown paint which is still evident in patches.

This sword was brought back by Corporal W. A. McGuffie who served in the 1st Battalion of the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) in the Far East during World War II. He was known to periodically remove the sword from its scabbard to clean the blade.
