Description Bayonet, French Model 1842/59. Long, single-edged blade, curves slightly downwards towards the tip. Blade has a long, shallow fuller, and a broad, flat spine. Steel crossguard and muzzle-ring. Hilt is of brass metal with grooved grips with a single steel rivet in the centre. Steel press-release on pommel. Engraved writing in italics on the spine of the blade near the hilt, the writing is indecipherable but would give the details of the armoury where the blade was made and the month and year of issue.
