Description Japanese, Military Issue, Officers' pattern, Second World War era. Of a type known as Shin-gunto. Highly polished, machine-made blade, slightly curved. Brass habaki and plain iron tsuba (guard). The grips are wrapped in a brown, woven material, with a black, iron menuki on each side of the tsuka (hilt). Both mekugi (retaining peg) are missing, one having been replaced with a screw. The scabbard is wood, painted black, with a single hanging loop. This sword was captured by the 1st Battalion The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) during the Second World War.
