Name/Title Iron rations
Description Ration tin, belonging to Pte Riley No 1448 of 2nd Battalion The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles). This is a sealed tin with a key on one side for opening. On the front, the word 'DINNER' is on one end in raised letters with the word 'COCOA' upside down on the other, though this is quite faint.
Inside, the tin is divided into 2 sections - at the 'DINNER' end is beef extract (like Bovril or Beef stock cubes) and at the 'COCOA' end is compressed cocoa powder. It would originally have had a paper label headed 'Emergency Ration' with the instruction that it was only to be opened on the instruction of an officer, and that it should maintain strength for up to 36 hours.
This tin is of the type used in the Boer War period (1899-1902).
