Description
| Broadsword, with mortuary hilt. Double edged blade ending in a spear point. Two broad fullers (grooves) at edges of ricasso with a triple fuller running down the centre of the blade from the ricasso to within 12cm of the tip. Both edges of the blade are heavily notched and the tip is worn and rounded. The hilt is in poor condition, with parts of the guard missing, particularly on the right hand side. The left hand and middle guards have detached from the pommel. The wooden grip over the tang is still present. The sword dates to the mid 17th century (1600s) and is one of two swords that came from Craig Farm, near Sandford. The farm was conveyed to William Cochran in 1649 having previously belonged to Sir Robert Hamilton of Silvertonhill. The sword may have belonged to a member of the Cochran family and is typical of the style used by both Government and Covenanting forces during the mid-late 17th century. |
