Description Distinguished Conduct Medal. Awarded to 13529 Pte R Owenson 10/Sco Rif.
The regimental history for the 10th Battalion records the following:
Within the 10th Battalion the work of Pte. Owenson, a stretcher-bearer in A Company, stands out pre-eminently in this day's fighting. As soon as the attack came to a standstill he began his work of bandaging the wounded, crawling from man to man, every movement drawing fire from the enemy.
Having used up all his bandages, he crept back until clear of the open ground. He then went to the Battalion Aid Post, some 800 yards in rear of
his Company, which involved the passage of a hostile artillery barrage. At the Aid Post he refilled his wallet with bandages and returned to his Company, again passing through the barrage. He crawled into the line, and throughout the day attended to wounded men of the 10th Battalion and of the 4th/5th Black Watch. He was rewarded by receiving the Distinguished Conduct Medal. Speaking of Owenson's act to the C.O., Maj.-Gen. Reed, who himself won the Victoria Cross at the battle of Colenso, said that in his experience he did not know of a more gallant act."
