Description
| Watercolour painting by Mary Armour. Shows a vase of flowers, a smaller pot of flowers and a bowl of fruit on the table. Quote from Glasgow Herald article 25/5/96: "Growing up in Blantyre, Mrs Armour says she could find little in the local landscape that she wished to paint. 'There was nothing in the local landscape that inspired me, which is probably why flowers played an important part in my work.'" The art teacher Penelope Beaton (1886-1963) at Hamilton Academy was greatly influential in her enthuiasism and in persuading Mary's father that she should attend art school. Mostly painted landscape, flowers, still life so this work is very typical of her style and favoured subject. 'Vigorous' approach to paintings comes from her father's love of gardening and flowers - never aimed for prettiness. |
