Description
| Mixed media work, comprising of a plaster(?) relief, painted, dry pigment, pva and marble dust. Depicting a landscape with blue sky, coal rigs etc. Framed in metal on hessian board. Work is signed and dated twice at lower right by artist Tom Hutcheson. Hutcheson came from a family of Lanarkshire miners - he was born in Uddingston on the edge of the Lanarkshire coalfeld. "Some of my earliest memories were of listening, in bed, to the feet of miners on the early shift, passing by my bedroom...later I became more aware of what these mines meant to the families of the menfolk who worked in them. This is what I wanted to express in my work." These emotions and industrial landscapes are what Hutcheson strove to express in his paintings. He used unusual materials like dried colour pigment, pva glue, and marble dust in his work, to emphasise the colour and texture of the environment. Hutcheson’s work is sometimes described as semi-abstract, because he often uses simple colour and flat shapes to express his emotions and feelings.
Throughout his life Hutcheson exhibited frequently in Scotland. He was also a teacher and worked as a graphic artist for the BBC. When the South Lanarkshire Council acquired Earth Day Lanarkshire, he expressed his surprise and said he was “glad that it has come home”. Sadly, Tom died in 1999. |
