Artist James Hardie studied at Larkhall and Glasgow School of Art. The Bather is one of Hardie's earlier paintings and it was started outdoors:
"I began with my easel and large canvas anchored to the rocks and painted what was in front of me." After he had produced several studies of rock pools, he began to paint indoors in his studio. Here he could work in a more favourable environment, where he could take more time to carefully consider the composition, colour and texture of his painting; this was a very important development for the young artist. The Bather was Hardie’s first landscape painting to include a figure in the composition.
