Description Oil painting of a baby wearing a pink jacket with blue socks. Painting is framed, glazed and unsigned. John Charles Lamont was born in Chryston, Lanarkshire and trained at the Glasgow School of Art where he was friends with Archibald McGlashan, Robert Sivell and James Cowie. Augustus John was an important influence.

Lamont’s paintings are very realistic in style and show influences from artist Augustus John. Both painters were concerned with expressing human characteristics in their portraits and figure compositions. Lamont usually painted figures, portraits and interiors, but only occasionally landscapes. His use of colour was generally subdued yet rich, like the dusty pink we can see in the baby’s clothing. His approach to the human form was completely objective as he tried to capture the personality and mood of the individual.
