Description
| Oil painting of Strathaven village with castle in background, cows and a figure, burn on left. Painting is framed and unglazed.
This painting depicts a view of the Town Mill from Dubh Crag, the large detached house situated high above the eastern flank of the Powmillan waterfall (known also as 'Millheugh') - looking West. From left to right painting shows: Mill House, Mill Building, Manager's House/Hostel, Granary. Absence of loading bay completed around 1922 suggests painting from the first decade of the 20th century or earlier.
Behind and overlooking Mill is Strathaven Castle, seen in its partly-demolished eastern elevation. The prominent dungeon is to the western corner and is not visible here.
This painting was displayed in the temporary exhibition: 'Treasures of South Lanarkshire' in 2001-2002. The venue for the exhibition was the Fives Court and the rear gallery at Low Parks Museum, Hamilton. |
