Description Painting in oil of paddle steamer 'Benmore' leaving dock, with a crowd watching. The Benmore was a paddle steamer built in 1876 by T B Seath & Co, Rutherglen, for P & A Campbell Ltd for the Broomielaw-Kilmun run. It was broken up in 1923. The Broomielaw is on the River Clyde in Glasgow and was the location for paddle steamers to depart.
This painting is based on a famous photograph by George Washington Wilson, taken on Fair Saturday morning in 1885 but the painting was likely painted in the 1970s or 1980s.
Painting is framed, glazed and signed at lower left with title at lower right.
This painting was displayed in the Rutherglen section of the temporary exhibition: “Treasures of South Lanarkshire” in 2001-2002. The venue for the exhibition was the Fives Court and the rear gallery at Low Parks Museum.
