H 8cm (H 3 1/8")
H 0.7cm (H 1/4")

Description Part of the mechanism from the clock of Hamilton's Tolbooth. Large bronze cog with five spokes and centre spindle. Small holes bored through perimeter at regular intervals. Two sets of numbers, 1 - 12, appear around the edge. Two screw in pegs at 7 o'clock. This piece was salvaged from the rubble of the Tolbooth by the donor's father on the day it was demolished. The Tolbooth was built in 1642; early records show that repairs to the clock took place in the late 1600s, suggesting the clock may have been an original part of the building. The date of this particular piece is unknown.
