Description Cash Register made of cast copper with a floral design cast on the outer casing.
This ornate cash register is believed to have belonged to John Hastie who owned a wine and spirit merchants at the cross in Strathaven in the late 1800’s and also a farm in the west of the town. John Hastie was a well known figure in the town and after his death he bequeathed a sum of money to build a public park and museum in Strathaven which still stands today.

This type of cash register was invented in 1883 and it transformed the way merchants did business. Previously they had no clear way of knowing if they were operating at a profit but the new cash register enabled them to quickly tally up the days profit and it also acted as a deterrent to thieves.

The National Cash Register Company in Ohio made this particular model and they were the biggest manufacturers of cash registers throughout the late 1800’s and early 1900’s when these brass cash registers were at their most popular.

John Hastie would have been one of the first merchants in Strathaven to own one of the new cash registers from America, demonstrating the farsighted approach which made him the successful businessman he was.
