Name/Title Social history: radio crystal set
Measurements H 25 W 17cm (H 9 13/16 W 6 11/16")
Description In wooden box - 'Revophone'. On display on 1st floor of Hamilton District Museum, Muir Street (now, 2010, the Muir Street frontage of Low Parks Museum) circa 1975-1984.

Made around 1927

On transfer on front of box: “REVOPHONE BBC TYPE APPROVED BY BROADCASTER GENERAL”

This radio needed no mains or battery to make it work. You needed to install a 100 feet (c. 30 metres) ariel cable to a pole in your garden. The set also had to be earthed by attaching it to a mains water pipe or a short length of pipe buried in the ground.

The signal was received by gently working the wire "cat’s whisker" detector on the crystal diode until a signal was heard. Then adjust the coarse tuning (right hand knob) to get the station you want. Finally, adjust the fine tuning (left hand knob) to get the best reception.

The connections on the front of the panel are (left to right) ariel; headphone; headphone; earth.

The left hand control is of home made design and unknown purpose. Normally this is an open container in which to stow the headphones.

On display at Low Parks Museum as the object of the month during October 2010.
Accession No DB839
