| in perspex case. A sample of mussel-band ironstone also known as "Cambuslang marble", from Hallside Quarry, Newton. The distinctive pattern on polished samples is formed from the compression of mussel shells during the Carboniferous period, c.300-360million years ago. This stone began to be discovered in the late 1700s with the beginnings of large-scale coal mining in Lanarkshire, as it was typically found above and below bands of coal. This marble was used in the fireplaces at Chatelherault. This sample was on display at Chatelherault 1990s-c.2005. |
