Description Covered with black leather or textured fabric, rectangular. With hinged lid. White metal plaque on top of lid reads 'Presented to / Dr James Carruthers / by the officials and workmen of / Bothwell Castle Colliery / As a token of esteem / On the occasion of leaving Bothwell / March 1904'.
Inside case is lining of purple velvet and purple satin with small white name plaque of 'W.B. Hilliard & Sons Glasgow'. Hilliard's was a well-known makers of medical instruments, based in Glasgow from 1834 to 1920. They also made instruments for Joseph Lister.
