Description Avon, Mk.202 Turbojet Engine. This Avon jet engine was made by Rolls-Royce Plc. The Avon was the first Rolls-Royce axial-compressor turbojet to enter production. Design commenced in 1946 with the first engine being built in 1947. The Rolls-Royce factory in East Kilbride, which opened in 1953, was originally built to develop and produce, and later to also service the Avon Jet Engine.

The Avon has since been used in 11 different types of military aircraft and two types of civil aircraft.

This particular engine, numbered 8376, was built in December1956 and is one of two engines from a Supermarine SCIMITAR; a naval fighter plane that entered service with the Royal Navy in 1958.

In 1956 an Avon-powered Fairey Delta aircraft set an air speed record of 1,132 miles per hour. The Avon also set a land speed record in 1983 when Thrust 2 reached a speed of 633.46 miles per hour. The engine weighs 1298kg and generates 11025lbf of thrust. Thanks go to Rolls-Royce Heritage Trust for the loan of the engine.
