Description Tile taken from the bathroom wall of the Kaiser's private suite in Hotel Altenberg, Alsace by Lieutenant P Campbell Hart, presumably during the First World War. Alsace was under German occupation before the War and the Hotel Altenburg was a grand hotel on the used by celebrities and royalty before the First World War, when it was partly destroyed and was later rebuilt as a hospital. Kaiser Wilhelm II stayed there in 1908.
Soldiers would often try and collect unusual mementos of places they had served
