Description Army Signal. Single page of official Army Form C.2123 "Messages and Signals". Pre-printed form with handwritten message in pencil. The signal gives notification to the 2nd Battalion The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) that Private James Towers of the Battalion had been awarded the Victoria Cross. The signal is dated 22/12/18 and reads as following: "First army wire AMS 12 begins AAA Award of VICTORIA CROSS to No.30245 Pte. JAMES TOWERS 2nd Bn Scottish Rifles approved aaa For information aaa Convey Corps Divisional and Brigade commanders congratulations" The signal has been signed in the bottom left corner by Pte J. Towers VC. The 2nd Battalion War Diary for December 22nd 1918 records: "One of the greatest days in the history of the Battalion “At about 10.00 hrs a wire came & stating that the VICTORIA CROSS had been awarded to PTE. JAMES TOWERS of B Company for an Act of the most unsurpassed bravery performed by him on the 6th Oct. this year.” The Pipe Band were paraded and played PTE TOWERS from Battalion Hdqrs through the village to his billet. He was carried shoulder high by a party of his own platoon & received a great ovation from the whole Battalion." The message was taken by Harry Podmore who served as a signaller with the 2nd Battalion The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) during the First World War.
