The Noritake Co. Ltd. was founded in Japan for the exclusive purpose of manufacturing chinaware for export. The company began in a small way early in the Meiji era when the Morimura brothers established an office in New York in 1876, and a short time later another one in Nagoya.
The Noritake Company was the only company allowed to continue production of commercial dinner-ware during W.W.II. The tree crest is believed to be the family crest of the Morimuras.
(Note a "Comport" is a form of dessert dish on a stem base, popular in the 19th Century.)
