Description Glazed, white with green floral and foliate designs. Rim broken and repaired. On base: VINE BORDER J & M P B & Co. The Vine Border design was produced by the Glasgow pottery J. & M.P. Bell and Company between 1841 and 1880. The diamond registration mark impressed on the base of the jug shows that it was made on 21st January 1854. This item is identical tothe jug numbered as 80.1561, and the registration mark on that jug is the same as this item. This would seem to show that they were donated together, although their numbers are not linked.

Bell’s Pottery was established by the Bell brothers in 1841, beside the Forth and Clyde Canal in Glasgow. They made transfer-printed white earthenware but soon expanded into china and parianware. Bell’s produced a vast range of transfer printed china which became extremely popular with middle class families from the West of Scotland. Equally, wares were exported worldwide. The Pottery was in production until 1912. Items may be marked J. & M.P.B. & Co., J. & M.P.Bell & Co, JB (inside a bell, impressed), J. & M.P.B. & Co.Ld. or B (inside a bell).
