Colonel Palmer 90th Light Infty by Bowkers Burghers In memory of the expedition under his command against the rebel chief Tini Macomo in Water Kloof this ring was taken off one of the rebels who was shot by Sergt Heinen of Bowkers Burghers during the skirmish of 12th June 1878.'

The 90th Regiment sailed for South Africa in January 1878 under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel Palmer. The Transvaal had been annexed (forcibly acquired) the previous year and there were ongoing problems between the Boer settlers and their native neighbours. The 90th would have sent out detachments to deal with rebellious chiefs.
