Name/Title Covenanter's banner: The 'BLUIDY BANNER'.
Measurements H 1m 35cm W 1m 55cm (H 4' 5 1/8" W 5' 1")
Media/Materials silk
Description Made of blue silk, the banner is inscribed at the top with gilded Hebrew characters, which read ‘Jehovah-Nissi’ (The Lord is my Banner). Below is the statement 'For Christ and His Truths'. The banner takes its name from the phrase at the bottom, written in blood red, which reads ‘No Quarters for Ye Active Enemies of Ye Covenant’.
The banner was carried in Cleland's army at the Battles of Drumclog and Bothwell Brig. It is reputed to have been gven by Cleland to his friend Henry Hall of Haughhead near Hawick (along with Cleland's sword) for safekeeping, to prevent them falling into the hands of an enemy. Hall was later wounded and on his deathbed gave the banner to his friend Cochrane, an equally zealous Covenanter. The banner remained in private hands, passed through generations of the Hall family and presented to The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) at a Conventicle in Douglas on May 12th, 1946.
